About Coach Barnes

Growing up, LeVon learned the importance of servant leadership first hand. His father Joe owned a small business and gave opportunities to those in the community that most would overlook and he also made sure that every kid in the neighborhood received a gift during the holidays.

LeVon’s mom Margie taught him about faith, humility and speaking up for those who may not feel they have a voice. At the age of 9, his life would change forever when his father unexpectedly died. It was in that instance that the village stepped up, from his family, coaches, teachers and mentors, LeVon took all of those life lessons and uses them today.

LeVon has always believed in being “a sponge” and paying it forward to the next generation. From pursuing a career in education LeVon is even more committed to ensuring better futures for all who live in Alamance County.

A Commitment to Solutions and Opportunity for All

Most teachers can relate to the idea that we are the first responders for students and their families. I have had hundreds of parents approach me about the need for social services, access to food stamps, or basic requests like school supplies for their children. Regardless of party or political beliefs, I have fought for every single one of my students and their families, because we all deserve a shot at the American Dream.

I have also seen the shortcomings of our political system locally and across the state. The lack of investment in public education and other services when our economy is the 8th strongest in the country is unacceptable. The gap between the haves and the have nots is widening at an alarming rate, and much of this is due to the partisan stranglehold that we see at the General Assembly.

My approach to politics is consistent with my approach to teaching, coaching and life in general: everyone deserves a fair shot, everyone deserves respect, and together, we are capable of making more progress than we ever possibly could on our own.
